#9 – Nickelodeon

This week we’re talking about Nickelodeon. We’ll pop open the Game Box to reboot Stick Stickly. Then we’ll look in the school box to learn how to make slime. Wynn shows us her NickToon toys in the Toy Box. In the Wonder Box we’re discussing the classic sketch comedy shows All That and You Can’t Do That on Television. Finally we’ll pull out some questions you submitted through the Idea Box.

    Hey y’all,

I thought this was one of the better episodes of the podcast so far, and not because I was on it. Your discussions made me think of all sorts of Nickelodeon memories I have. Just a few thoughts on some of them:

I used to love All That, so I was sad it didn’t hold up. The Good Burger movie that spun off of the show was my absolute favorite movie in the world for the duration of one summer. I bought the VHS (the tape was neon Nickelodeon orange, of course) and the soundtrack, and sung “I’m A Dude” for most of 1997.

I’m glad to hear that Anne Marie knows of and is a fan of David the Gnome. She’s one of the few people I know who actually remember that show’s existence. It was one of my favorites at the time it was on.

Alex Mack was also a favorite show, when I was a bit older, although one I hardly ever watched. Not sure why; maybe it had something to do with when it was on vs. when I got home from school. Also, Legends of the Hidden Temple was probably the best gameshow ever on television (at least in my memory). I can’t believe there wasn’t more than a spare mention of Salute Your Shorts! Although when Bill said that Hey Dude doesn’t hold up, it made me wonder if maybe the same is true of that.

Lastly, I have to second the recommendation of Avatar: TLA and LOK. Some of the best cartoon storytelling I’ve ever seen. I don’t think you need to be an anime fan to enjoy it, either. While it uses a lot of Asian cultural influences, and is animated by Korean studios, it’s definitely not anime. It usually doesn’t look like anime, and they don’t use hardly any of the usual anime storytelling devices. Its substance and sensibility are Asian, but its bones and structure are solidly Western. There’s some really great worldbuilding in those shows, too, with the element bending and the hybrid animals. Not to mention that Bill would totally love Sokka’s sense of humor.

    Great job on the episode!
